Description
Polycarbonate (PC) is a thermoplastic/technical plastic. It is characterized by high transparency and high heat distortion resistance. Dense polycarbonate sheets are produced by extruding polycarbonate granulate. Polycarbonate boards have high degree of impact resistance compared to other plastics, which makes them suitable for use in public places. The solid polycarbonate plates have UV protection and are non-combustible, preventing flames from spreading. Polycarbonate boards are intended for engineering solutions, where a compromise can be sought between the strength of the material and its weight. The dense sheet of polycarbonate has good temperature resistance and low thermal conductivity, as well as good sound insulation.
Polycarbonate sheets have the following characteristics:
- Very high dimensional stability
- Low water absorption
- Excellent impact strength right down to lowest temperature ranges (200-300 higher than glass’)
- High hardness
- Good machinability
- Good adhesive properties
- Good weldability
- Highest continuous operating temperature of the colourless transparent plastics
- Good insulation properties
- Can also be supplied with UV protection
- High transparency (light transmittance over 90%)
- Increased temperature resistance from -40ᵒC to +120ᵒC.

Properties
Even at minus temperatures, polycarbonate offers excellent impact strength. PC plates have low water absorption, are heat distortion resistant and have good thermoforming properties. PC boards are usually used in areas where impact resistance is needed due to the risk of splintering. Since PC can be effectively protected against UV through coatings, it is also popular in outdoor applications. The light permeability of PC is over 90%.
Processing
PC can be processed very effectively in its solid state. Many processing and machining operations can be carried out, for example drilling, milling, grinding or sawing.
